What Happens When Spirit Comes Forward in a Session?

I talk about spirituality regularly, but I don't often explain what actually happens to me when spirit comes forward during a session. I think it is important that I start talking about this more openly, particularly because spirituality is part of who I am and part of the work I do.

The first thing I want to make clear is that I don't sit down with every client expecting spiritual communication to happen. Someone can book a session with me because they need clarity about their life, work, relationships, decisions or something they are struggling to understand. They do not have to come because they want to communicate with someone who has died.

There are also people who specifically want the spiritual side of my work, and naturally those sessions are different.

For me, spiritual communication is not something that begins because I decide, “Right, now I am going to talk to spirits.” It can happen while I am listening to the client, while I am taking notes, while I am asking questions or later in the session when we have started identifying patterns and working through what the client has brought into the room.

How Does Spirit Come Forward for Me?

This is probably one of the hardest things to explain because there isn't one single way.

Sometimes I receive words. Sometimes I have a physical sensation. Sometimes something comes into my awareness very strongly. Sometimes I experience information intuitively. There are also occasions when I become aware of something without immediately understanding why it is important.

My abilities and senses have also changed throughout my life. What was particularly strong for me years ago is not necessarily what is strongest today. I have learned not to expect spiritual communication to remain exactly the same simply because I experienced it in a particular way before.

This is also why I am careful about telling other people how they should experience spirituality. My experience belongs to me. Someone else's experience may be completely different.

When something comes forward during a session, I still continue listening to the client. I don't immediately stop everything because I have experienced something spiritually. The person sitting in front of me remains the priority.

Who Comes Forward?

There isn't a list.

I don't sit there choosing who I would like to communicate with, and I don't promise a client that a particular person will come forward.

Sometimes I understand the presence to be someone connected to the client. Sometimes the information becomes clearer as the session continues. Sometimes I don't have enough information to identify anything confidently.

That distinction matters to me because I don't want to fill the gaps simply because somebody desperately wants an answer.

Grief can make us want certainty. Missing somebody can make us want one particular person to appear, say exactly the right thing and answer every question we have been carrying. I understand that desire, but I don't believe I should manufacture certainty for somebody simply because certainty would make them feel better.

If I don't know, I don't know.

What Do They Say?

This also varies.

Spiritual communication, as I experience it, is not necessarily a long conversation containing answers to everything happening in somebody's life. Sometimes what comes forward is extremely simple. Sometimes it relates to something the person has been discussing. Sometimes it appears completely unrelated initially.

And sometimes I receive something that I simply keep to myself.

Not every piece of information that enters my awareness needs to become somebody else's information.

This is particularly important in my coaching sessions because a client may not have come for mediumship or clairvoyance. I need to remain aware of the difference between what I am experiencing internally and what the client has actually asked me to do.

What Happens Inside Me?

I remain conscious of the room, the person in front of me and what we are discussing. I am still Marcia. I am still listening. I am still taking notes. I am still thinking about what the client has told me.

At the same time, there can be another level of awareness occurring alongside that conversation.

That is probably the simplest way I can explain it.

I don't disappear from the session. I don't surrender responsibility for what I say because I believe something came from spirit. If the words leave my mouth, I still have a responsibility for delivering them appropriately.

That responsibility is particularly important to me because people can be extremely vulnerable when discussing grief, death, relationships, regret, guilt and the people they have lost.

Spirituality does not remove my responsibility towards the human being sitting in front of me.

What If You Don't Want Spiritual Communication?

Tell me.

There is a difference between booking a session with somebody whose work includes spirituality and booking a mediumship or clairvoyant session specifically because you want communication.

You are allowed to establish your boundaries.

You can also be curious without being convinced. You can believe in life after death and question mediumship. You can be interested in spiritual experiences while wanting to examine them intellectually. You can believe completely, partially or not at all.

I don't need you to adopt my beliefs for us to have a useful conversation.

There may still be things that I experience internally during our session because I cannot promise to switch off something that has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. What I can do is remain responsible for how I work with you and respect the boundaries we have established for the session.

I Don't Expect You to Take My Word for It

This is another reason I have started writing more openly about spirituality.

For a long time, I kept much of this side of myself private. I am changing that, slowly and responsibly.

I don't expect somebody to read one of my articles and suddenly believe everything I believe. In fact, I would rather you didn't.

Question things. Think. Read. Research. Pay attention to your own experiences. Decide what makes sense to you and what doesn't.

There are things I understand spiritually because of my own experiences, and there are questions I continue to have. Those two things can exist together.

The same applies when you sit with me.

I can tell you what I experience. I can tell you what I understand. I can tell you when I believe something has come through spiritually. But your interpretation still belongs to you.

That is an important boundary in my work.

I am a Clarity Coach who is also deeply spiritual. I don't need to remove one part of myself to make the other part more acceptable. What I do need to do is practise responsibly, communicate clearly and make sure that the person sitting opposite me remains a participant in their own session rather than becoming a spectator to my beliefs.

And perhaps that is the most important thing I can tell you about what happens when spirit comes forward.

The session is still about you.
